Route 1 : The Roaches – Derbyshire Peak District
The Roaches is a fine walk with a steep climb at first followed by a steady climb to the sumit.
I park on the road that runs parallel to them just at the base of Hen Cloud. The public footpath can be reached from there, just at the valley between Hen Cloud and the steep ascent of The Roaches. There’s an old building that has been converted for use by climbers. From there, hang left (NW) and follow the ridge.
The Roaches form a gritstone escarpment which marks the south-western edge of the Peak District high above above Leek and Tittesworth reservoir.

Directions : Get to Leek, and then head Norton on the A53 then go left (East) onto a minor road signposted for Upper Hulme. The road forks sharply to the left (which appears to go down) and right (which appears to go up). Take the left fork and follow the road through Upper Hulme, crossing the pleasant stream. About 1/3 of a mile on you’ll see the parking allotments on the right of the road, with Hen Cloud peering over you from the right.
